Getting the most out of any networking event can be challenging for most people. Just keep in mind that everyone participating has the same purpose - to network! So relax, be yourself and keep in mind these tried and proven tips:

  • Standing = "networking". Don't sit - you'll sabotage your chances connecting with someone. Sitting makes you available only to chat with those sitting immediately next to you (2-4 people). Plus most tables will face your back to the "mingling" area (making you not only hard to approach but appear not interested in networking).
  • Share something tangible. Business cards are a must, but if you can not sufficiently explain your services on a 2x3 inch space then have supporting materials ready. But don't rush into business relationships. Have lunch, get acquainted, but never push a business card or brochure on anyone. Send a thoughtful follow-up note with the material a couple days later. This makes you both more memorable and easier for others to learn about what your business can do.
  • Show and Tell. If you have great testimonials remember to mention them. If you have a product that can be carried with you easily - show it off and let people hold it or try it out while you explain the benefits.
  • Don't Discriminate. Learn about and do your best to collect business cards of everyone you meet. Whether or not they will use your services or vis versa - everyone is a potential referral source. Don't rule out people who are indirectly related to what you want to achieve. They may be a valuable source of knowledge or advice, or may be able to introduce you to others who want to refer you business.
  • Go beyond a handshake. The key to getting referrals is in creating a true business network. One where you are establishing mutually beneficial relationships. So stop, listen and learn about someone else's business. The more you know about them the more you'll see how you can do business with them.
  • Give right and receive Big. Greater referrals come from establishing trust. Give your attention to others businesses whether that be advice, leads or other support before asking for referrals. When you give willingly others are more likely to return the favor.

Try and make everyone's acquaintance at a meeting. Don't panic or try to rush through making connections. Pick and choose at each meeting what relationships to further cultivate and give the most attention, wisely and patiently. The more people you make meaningful contact with, the higher your probability of success.
